San Blas - Panama
Know a little about the destination
The San Blas Archipelago is a group of 365 islands belonging to Panama located off the north coast of the Isthmus, east of the Panama Canal. It is home to the Kuna Indians, who form part of the Kuna Yala region along the Caribbean coast of Panama.
Kuna Yala or Guna Yala is an indigenous region of Panama with provincial status. It has an area of 2,393.10 km² and a population of 32,446 inhabitants (2000 census), making up a demographic density of 13.56 inhab./km². This region has no districts, unlike the other Panamanian provinces. It is inhabited by the Guna ethnic group.
Its capital is El Porvenir. It is limited to the north with the Caribbean Sea, to the south with the province of Darién and the region of Emberá Wounnan, to the east with Colombia and to the west with the province of Colón.
The district was called San Blas until 1998 and Kuna Yala until 2010. In October 2011, the government of Panama recognized the Guna people's assertion that, in their mother tongue, the letter "K" did not exist, and that their name official should be "Guna Yala"
Springs
When you visit the San Blas Islands, you will find Guna Indians selling Molas to all tourists in their small canoes and on the islands. In the Dulegaya language, which is the native language of the Guna, "spring" means "clothes" or "clothes". These garments have complicated patterns knitted on them, as in a zigzag pattern, the more complicated, the more expensive the spring is. The art of creating spring reflects a synthesis of traditional Guna culture. Mola art developed over the years, when Guna women had access to store-bought gardening products.
History of Springs
The spring originated from the traditional practice of Guna women painting their bodies with geometric and zigzag designs, using the natural colors available on the islands and in the jungle. Later, the spring designs were sewn on fabrics purchased from foreign settlers in Panama. Recently, in the last few decades, these same zigzag designs were woven into cotton and became commonly known as springs.
